Wimbledon Finals

The greatest stage in world tennis comes to this most exciting weekend of the tennis calender as the finals of singles and doubles come.

Mens- Djokovic vs Nadal- This was an hotly anticipated match of the year as the man who cannot stop winning took on the player who is seen as one of the best in all time. The build up to the match was big and the tennis quality justified the big build up. In an exciting first set where both men were hitting there strides from the first hit. They were pushing line barriers to the limit and really big forehand and backhands. The set seemed to be heading to an tie-break as no-one got an break point chance until the 10th game. The score was 5-4 to Djokovic with Nadal serving. Djokovic played 2 super points with one backhand winner and then an forehand winner to give him self to break points and more importantly 2 set points which Djokovic won on the first attempt as Nadal hit an backhand long to take the first set 6-4. Djokovic taking great inspiration from the first really came out firing in the second. He was able to win nearly all the 50/50 points and Nadal's level dropped slightly and Djokovic's level went up and in an flash Djokovic was 2 sets to love up as he raced through the second set 6-1. Now only an set away from the Championship.

That seemed to play on his mind for quite an while as his level dropped significantly as he was starting to miss those 50/50 shots that he was getting in the first 2 sets and even missing more of the basic shots. He went down an early break . He try and rally back as he had an break back chance straight away but Djokovic was unable to take advantage. This seemed to be costly as Nadal's level seemed to raise significantly. His intensity was high his ground strokes were deep and in and his feet movement was precise. With all that and Djokovic's level dropped Nadal gave Djokovic an piece of his own medicine and took the third set 6-1. By this time the tension was running through both men and mistakes started to come off the rackets of both men as they traded early breaks in at the start of the 4th set but it was Djokovic who was able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck as he was able to break in the 8th game. It was an long and exciting game as both men were hitting massive shots but Nadal was the first to crumble and he was in touching distance of the Wimbledon Title. All he had to do was hold the biggest game of his life. Nadal was determined to not give up without an fight and won the first point and the third point to be 15-30 up really asking Djokovic the question but Djokovic was able to come up with the answers and was able to get it 40-30 when Djokovic hit an good first serve Nadal hit back Djokovic then hit an backhand strongly back to Nadal and he was unable to control the ball and the ball floated out and won his first Wimbledon 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. This is an great moment for Djokovic as he will become world number 1 when the new rankings come out the next day and he has won 2 of the 3 slams on offer this year and has an record of 51-1 as he continues this incredible run.

Women's: An final that not many people predicted as Sharapova many people's favourite to win the competition played last years Semi-Finalist Kvitova. These two women started off tense as they traded breaks in the early parts of the first set but both women started to settle into there roles quickly enough and showed why they had made it this far. Sharapova was showing off her big forehand and her able to pounce on any short balls from Kvitova while Kvitova was showing off her ability to use left hand to good use by finding these angles that right handers find difficult to handle. The set bowled down to the the 8th game where they played an long game. It had that feeling of whoever won that game would win the set and both women really did entertain the crowd with some breathtaking shots. The game kept going deuce and advantage 3 times for Sharapova and twice for Kvitova but the second break point chance for Kvitova was when Kvitova hit one of her many forehand winners as she broke the Russian serve. Sharapova the fighter she is tried her best to break back as she had 30-40 in the next game but Kvitova stayed mentally strong gave 2 un-returnable serves and another forehand winner to take the set 6-3.

If the first set was an tight affair the second was even more as both women were unable to hold serve that often in the second set. But it was always Sharapova coming back from behind being 2-0 down as she hit an double double falt to come back to 2-2 and then going down another break 3-2 down and then break straight back to 3-3 but her problem was that she was unable to hold her serve and was broken once again to at 4-3. Sharapova luck seemed to have ran out when Kvitova was able to hold to go up 5-3. Sharapova did her best to hold her serve for the first time in many games but Kvitova played an nerveless game to go up 40-0 and then she finished off in style with an ace down the centre. That was her first ace in the match and the timing could not be any better as she won her first Wimbledon Title 6-3, 6-4. She is only 21 and is tipped to go very high in women's tennis and expected to win many more championships in her time and for Sharapova she didnt win but it does prove that she is back after making the French Semis making Birmingham Final and the Wimbledon Final and she will be back next year to try and win this famous trophy again.

Finals in the other competitions

Men's Doubles- The Bryan brothers won an record equally 11th Gram Slam as they eased to there first Wimbledon title. They have had an tough rode to get here with 3 5 set victories including in the semi-finals being 2 sets up and only winning 15-13 in the 5th set but no such problem in the final as they beat Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Women's doubles- Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik vs Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur- Kveta and Katarina seen as the veterans in the women' game against the young pair who take the singles tennis more seriously than there doubles now. Katarina and Sabine have never won an Wimbledon title before in Women's doubles were determined to have there name on the honours board and played like it meant the world. In an tight first set they were able to get the break in the 6th game. They didnt able to hold onto there serve for the rest of the set to take the first 6-3. The second they dominated as Stosur and Lisicki were not able to hold onto there serve once. They wer able to scramble one break but that was the only game they won in the whole set as Katarina and Sabine won 6-3, 6-1. They were delighted as they screamed with delight when they won.

Mixed Doubles- In the final match on centre court of the 2 weeks the mixed double final between Jurgen Melzer and Iveta Benesova vs Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Vesnina. This was not much of an classic match as this match didnt go past the hour. In an fast first set there were flashes from brilliance by both pairs and showed glimpses of brilliance by all 4 players Melzer Benesova came out on top in an relatively tight first set. With the first set gone Bhupathi and Vesnina were unable to ever get back in the match as Melzer and Benesova blew them away in the second winning in 51 minutes 6-3, 6-2.
