Cricket World Cup opening ceremony

Today it became reality that the cricket world cup has hit. There was a great show put on. All the captains were paraded around in rickshaws at the Bangabandhu Stadium, which is the old Dhaka stadium. It was great for Dhaka and Bangladesh as they were co-hosting a world cup for the first time.

The highlight of that night was people playing aerial cricket with high-flying acrobats chasing an laser-beamed ball around the pitch. The tournament gets under way at the new Mirpur stadium where Bangladesh host India on Saturday.

There was entertainment from Indian singer Sonu Nigam, Bangladesh-based Runa Laila and Canadian Bryan Adams provided further entertainment. The world cup will be 6 weeks with 49 matches. It was a big day all around Asia but it was a proud day for Bangladeshi's. The government marked this historic day with a half day so they can see the opening ceremony and a lot of people must have seen it as the streets of Dhaka were strangely quiet.

Bangladesh will host 8 matches in Bangladesh including 2 world cup quarter finals, 12 matches at Sri Lanka and 29 matches at India including the match at Mumbai where the final will be held. It promises to be an exciting world cup and the attendance should be much higher than they were 4 years ago in the Caribbean.
