Sunday's cricket world cup matches

Sri Lanka vs Canada- Sri Lanka got there campaign under way in impressive style as they trashed Canada. Sri Lanka won the toss elected to bat and after the early dismissal of Tharanga out for 20 Sri Lanka came alive. The exciting Dilshan got them off the a flyer as he hit quick fire 50 off 59 balls. Then the captain Sangakkara came in and scored an impressive 92 off 87 including 7 fours and one 6 and then the most impressive was vice captain Mahela Jayawardene who hit the fastest world cup century by a Sri Lankan and he did that off 81 balls including 9 fours and a 6. They hit 332- 7 in there 50 overs.

Canada never really looked like they were going to catch Sri Lanka at any moment. Actually 3 players made it to double figures and when you are chasing such a big total that isnt good enough to even get close. Cheema was the top scorer hitting 37 off 35 balls. He had good support from Bagai who hit 22 off 47 balls and Baidwan was left not out with 16 runs. The bowling figures were really impressive by Sri Lanka as Kulasekara got 3 wickets 2 maidens for only 16 runs. Perera was an impressive opening bowling parter getting also 3 wickets for 24 runs off 7 overs. The great man Muralitharan got a couple near the end and Mendis and Samaraweera shared a wicket each.

Kenya v New Zealand- This wasnt much of a contest and New Zealand won this game by 10 wickets. It was made worse as Kenya won the toss and elected to bat as they were bowled out for 69 runs. That was the 5 lowest score in World Cup History. Only Waters, Obuya and Kamande made it to double figures and they contributed 46 of the 69 runs and 10 of the runs came from extras. Southee and Oram took 3 wickets a piece off 8.5 overs conceding 15 runs put together. The star of the bowling performance was Bennett who took 4 wickets for 16 runs off 5 overs. They were bowled out for just under 24 overs.

New Zealand's reply was swift as they knocked off the target with 8 overs bowled. Guptill hitting 39 including 5 fours and 2 sixes off 32 bowls and Breden McCullum hit 26 off 17 bowls including 4 fours. They will have tougher tests to come when they play Australia in th next match on Friday at Nagpur. For Kenya its a quick turn around against Pakistan on Wednesday at the Hambantota stadium in Sri Lanka.
