Wimbledon day 3

On an rain stricken day there was some magically Wimbledon matches as the tournament got into its full swing.

Men's- Another Stirling performance by the defending champion as he raced into the next round. The young American Sweeting just had no response to the power and the accuracy of the world number 1. He came out of the blocks early and really took control of this match. His groundstrokes were powerful and accurate and blew the American away for the first two sets. There was an small blip in the Nadal game in the third set at 2-0 up where he got broken and faced another break point in his next service game and was missing some easy shots but that is as good as it got for Sweeting as Nadal raped up the match winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

It was an similar story for the World Number 4 and British number 1 as he came out of the blocks the quicker against the German Kamke. He got an break early on and started to dominate the game. Throughout the first set he was holding easily while Kamke was struggling to hold onto his. To cap off an very good first set he broke the German in the 9th to rap up the second set 6-3. That gave him serve at the start of the second set which he used to his advantage. Kamke was getting into the Murray serve an bit more and even had one chance to break in the second set but Murray class was there to be seen as he got one break and kept that 3 point advantage till the end of the set. It was not vintage Murray but he was doing what he had to do. The 3rd set was the most competitive as Murray's level dropped and Kamke really did fight. Kamke was holding serve easily and making Murray work to hold his. He had 4 chances to break but Murray played well on the big points and in the 11th game he took his second chance to break in the 3rd set to serve out the match, Kamke made him work to serve it out having him 30 all but some big serves and some good set of points won him the match. It wasnt his best but he did what he had to do which was good enough to win in 3.

Roddick was also an winner of day 3 at Wimbledon. His impressive form continued as he served some big aces and had an big percentage of first serves. He only had 2 break points to save in the whole match Victor Hanescu just could not get into the game. The end scoreline looked close 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 but as Roddick was holding serve so easily the set was always slipping away for Hanescu. Roddick through safely. There were also wins for last years runner up Berdych, Fish, Monfils, Simon and Gasquet. The big shocks of day 3 came from former quarter finalist Wawrinka losing to unseeded Italian Bolelli in straight sets 7-6, (7-5) 6-3, 7-6, (7-4) and Verdasco losing in 4 sets after that epic win yesterday to Robin Haase 7-6, (7-3) 6-7, (3-7) 6-2, 6-2 and the other seed to be knocked out is Chela losing in straight sets to Bogomolov of the USA 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 and there was heart-break for big Canadian server Raonic as he hurt his knee early in the match against Muller and had to pull out of the match he was leading 2-3.

Women- Most likely the match of the tournament as Venus Williams was taken right to the limit against the oldest women left in the draw Kimiko Date-Krumm at 40 years old. In one of the best sets of all time Kimiko Date-Krumm played some inspired tennis and was racing to the first set at 5-1 she was playing out of her skin and on an wet day the crowd were really lifted by her tennis. But Venus known as a tigress fought back superbly as she came from 5-1 down to 5-6 up and with 2 set points but Kimiko Date-Krumm was able to hold onto her serve and take it to an tie break.

An set of the highest quality and drama matches in the tie break. Again Kimiko Date-Krumm did brilliantly to go 6-2 up as both women traded blows but Venus doesnt know when she is beaten and fights back to 6-6 and looking like she might sneak the first set. Kimiko Date-Krumm was able to hold onto her nerve in the end as she won the next 2 points to take the first set. Venus not wanting to go out went up another gear to get into an early lead of 3-1 and despite Kimiko Date-Krumm great fighting ability and some amazing points she could not break back and Venus won the second set 6-4. The fairytale was slowly slipping away from Kimiko Date-Krumm as she went down an early break in the third set but the drama wasnt complete as Kimiko Date-Krumm broke straight back as this match just went on and on. The match went on but the quality remained as the centre court crowd really did get there moneys worth. Each game went on and still there was nothing to separate them it went all the way to 6 games all and still nothing to choose. Kimiko Date-Krumm then had her opportunity to break but Venus hung on to hold and in the next game the story ended as Venus finally got the killing touch and went through 6-7(6-8,) 6-4, 8-6. An great performance by both women but Venus just had enough to get the finishing touches in the match of the day.

Zvonareva had an slightly easier run through to the 3rd round as she beat fellow Russian Vesnina and doubles partner. She raced through the first set 6-1 and looked to be easing to the second as she broke in the 11 game to go 6-5 up but Vesnina showed some fight and was able to break back straight away and take it to an tie-break. The tie break was tight but Zvonareva just had enough to sneak it 7-5 and win the match 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). There were wins for Azarenka, Petkovic, Radwanska, Pennetta, Hantuchova, Cibulkova and Gajdosova. The only seed to go out from the women today was Bethanie Mattek-Sands who lost to Japan's Misaki Doi 6-4 5-7 7-5. Though she wasnt happy with some of the decisions that were made during the match including the final point where she thought the ball was in when it was called out and she didnt shake hands with the umpire to show her frustration.

British players- There was mix news for the British women today as Laura Robson produced an excellent win Kerber of Germany. She lost an first set that she was winning 4-2 and eventually lost it 4-6. It looked as if her Wimbledon was coming to an end when she was down an break in the second set but she hung in there and broke back and then it got better as she then became up an break to serve for the set at 5-4 but she was unable to serve out and it went to an tie break where she produced her best tennis to win it 7-4. It looked as if that Momentum was going to take her over the line as she went up an double break and both break converted at 4-0 but Robson tightened up and as quickly as she was up she got broken twice to be only up 4-3 back on serve. But Kerber could not convert the break she won as Robson won her break back and was serving for the match at 5-3. Even though it was 15-30 she held strong and won the match and she looked very happy winning her very first Gram Slam match. She will take on Sharapova tomorrow evening on Court 1.

There was heart break for Heather Watson as an injury restricted her from an winning position. He raced through the first set Johansson as she won 6-2 and looked good for set 2 at 2-3 when she sustained an elbow injury. She had in heavily strapped and it showed she was in pain throughout. She did go down an break in the second but she did break back to 4-4 all. She fought hard but she went down 4-6 in the second. In the last set she went through the pain barrier and came back from an break of serve to try and stay in the match but in the 10th game Johansson got the killer blow as she broke Watson to take the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. After the match she broke down in tears knowing she had the match and looked odds on to getting an straight sets victory but there will be more chances for the talented girl from Guernsey.

Keothavong though had an disappointing round 2 as she got out-played and out classed on court one against the 8th seed Kvitova. She barely had any chances in the whole match to make an impact only having one break point chance in the whole match. She struggled to hold her own serve and went down to Kvitova rather easily 6-1, 6-2.
