2011 Formula 1 world championship round 1 Australia - Race

Sebastian Vettel turned pole position into race victory after leading start to finish in Melbourne.

The defending champion finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Vitaly Petrov who secured his first podium finish in formula 1.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finished fourth ahead of Mark Webber and Jenson Button who had a frustrating afternoon mainly because being stuck behind Felipe Massa for most of the early stages of the race.

Button only succeeded passing Massa by taking a shortcut to avoid a collision but Button did not let Massa back passed him so had a drive-through penalty despite claiming he was ahead before the corner.

Sergio Perez was very impressive as both Sauber's finished behind Button in seventh and eighth but was disqualified for a rear wing technical infringement which premotes both Force India drivers Adrian Sutil and debutant Paul di Resta into the points. Sauber will launch an appeal to this decision.

Mercedes dreadful weekend was confirmed as Micheal Schumacher had a right rear puncture after was hit by Jaime Alguersuari in the opening lap and then retired on lap 22 with accident damage.

A lap later Rubens Barrichello made a desperate lunge on Nico Rosberg and hit the Mercedes side pod damaging the cooling system while Barrichello had a damaged front wing and a drive-through penalty.
