England vs West Indies- England pulled off another magic comeback as they beat the West Indies. England made an gritty 243 all out. England knew they had to win and so rung the changes bring in Tredwell for the injured Shahzad n this turning pitch. Anderon who has been poor with the ball was dropped for Tremlett and most surprisingly Luke Wright was in for the out of form Collingwood. The West Indies made a couple of changes as they bring back the exciting Gayle for Chanderpaul at the top of the order and the young leg spinner Bishoo for his debut for Miller. England won the toss and elected to bat.
The problem for England was that many of the top batsman got starts but didnt go on. Strauss making 31, Prior 21, Trott 47, Bell 27. When Bopara was out for 4 England were in big trouble at 151-6. But then Luke Wright scored an crucial 40 with Tim Bresnan scoring 20 and Tredwell scoring 9. He didnt score many runs Tredwell but he stayed in long enough for Wright to score his runs. Tremlett was the last man to go in the 49th over (48.4) when England were 243 all out. 10-15 runs short of where England wanted to be.
The West Indies bowling was tight and solid as they kept taking wickets at big moments of the match. Roach ended up with 9.4 overs for 34 runs and 2 wickets, Russell being a bit expensive but getting wicket 4 wickets for 49 runs in his 8 and the most impressive on debut Bishoo 3-34 in his 10. He bowled only 1 bad over in the whole spell. England had an defendable total but will not easy.
It looked well short of where they wanted to be when Gayle came out attacking and hitting everything away to the boundary. He was taking apart Bresnan but we ready to play out Swann at the other end. It wasnt that much better when Tremlett came on as he was getting hit for more runs.
England then brought Tredwell finally got Gayle trapped LBW to an straight delivery. Tredwell next over got Smith out. It was fast work by Prior to stump Smith. It got even better for Tredwell as he bowled an a ball which just turned and got the edge of Bravo and the captain Strauss took an sharp catch. Sammy, the captain and Thomas tried to re-build but just like England they lost another couple of quick wickets from the bowling of Bopara as he bowled them both. Sammy for 41 and Thomas for 9. West Indies were 118-5 as the experienced Sarwan and the exciting and attacking Pollard came in.
Pollard started off in an attacking mind trying to hit Tredwell out of the attack. Sarwan was content to stay in and be that anchor for the team. The partnership was going along nicely together they made 32 runs until England's go to bowler Swann got Pollard LBW. But then Russell who played brilliantly with the ball really did take the attack to England. England thought they were winning the game when Pollard went at 150-6 but Russell attacked the bowling. He xould attack because Sarwan was holding up one end. They got to 50 partnership off 53 balls. They were racing towards there target and the partnership was 77 when everything started to go wrong for the West Indies.
Russell was getting towards 50 runs but on 49 Tredwell bowled an straight ball which didnt turn and Russell missed and he was out for 49 off 46 balls including 2 fours and 3 sixes. Tredwell nearly got another wicket as he bowled another straight ball which was the LBW decision was turned down. It was reviwed but it was upheld. The next over Swann bowled an magical over getting Sarwan as he tried to drive Swann in his first ball and got the outside edge and Bell took an sharp catch. The second ball was an super unplayable ball which Roach missed. Roach tried to hit Swann down the ground next ball but the ball went up in the air going away from the fielders but Tremlett dived and had to use his 6ft 8 reach to take an super catch and and the West Indies were 223-9. The come back was complete when in the next over when Benn tried to keep the strike and go for 2 runs but Trott gave an acurate throw which Prior took and knocked down the stumps. The come back was complete.
It was another great team effort by England coming back from 222-6 to 225 all out when England seemed to have lost the match they seem somehow to get the result. Swann bowled brilliantly as he got 3-36 off his 10 with one madien with Bopara bowling tightly 8.4 overs 22-2 with 2 maidiens and the man of the match Tredwell getting 10 overs 2 madiens for 48-4. What that means is that England are not yet through they need one of two results to go there way. Either South Africa will need to beat Bangladesh in Dhaka or India beating the West Indies here in Chennai. England will go to Dehli as they go to an holding camp there to see where they have to go for the quarter final or there trip home.
