On an busy day at SW19 there were all the emotions were played out. There were the normal shocks, expected victory and great stories on the second day which was even busier because of rain on day 1.
Mens: The Five Times Champions seemed right at home as he came through his opening match at centre court. This was an easier win that his one last year where he was 2 points away from going out in straight sets. The first set was an close set as both men were holding serve comfortably. Federer was making some usual mistakes as he was trying to find his footing on grass as the first set went to an tie break. In the tie Break Federer stepped up an gear and went on to win it 7 games to 2. The second was also like the first as Federer was making some mistakes but he was able to get an break in the second and was able to serve out for the second set. The Third was different as Federer seemed more at home and found his feet as he was took control of the third set from the word go. He was hitting the ball better his movement was better and Kukushkin just could not stay with that pace and got beaten 6-2 in the final as Federer won the match 7-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Djokovic also was an winner on centre court as he beat Jeremy Chardy in straight sets. It was an competitive first set as both men were holding serve but the warning signs were there for Chardy as Djokovic was getting closer in each service game that Chardy was serving while holding his own serve easily and in the 9th game the inevitable happened when Djokovic broke. He went on to serve out the first set and after that never looked back. Djokovic started going up an gear and Chardy went down one as errors started to creep into his game all to frequently. Djokovic raced through the second set 6-1. It didnt get any better for Chardy in the 3rd as he could not cut down on the errors and also went down by the same scoreline as he did on the second set. He won 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in just 80 minutes of the match (1 hour 20 Mins).
The pick of the other matches on the mens side has to be Stepanek vs Verdasco where Verdasco came back from 2 sets to love down and saved match points in the 4th set to come back and win 9-7 in the final set. The final score of the match was 2-6 4-6 6-3 7-6 9-7. Soderling also had an tussle in his first round as he was taken to 4 sets against the German Philipp Petzschner eventually coming through 6-4 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-5). Roddick, Del Potro and Ferrer had easier times as they got through in straight sets. There were also victories for Simon, Chela, Lopez, Troicki, Youzhny, Hewitt, Nalbandian and Baghdatis who beat former world number 4 James Blake in an 5 set thriller. There were no such drama on court 3 where the two marathon men of last year played but this time the game was much shorter as Isner won 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 7-6 (8-6). The major shocks of the first round was Cilic going out to Veteran Ljubicic in 4 sets and though competitor Davydenko went out in straight sets to the Australian Tomic.
Women's- An emotional come back for the defending champion Serena Williams as she battled her way to the second round. It all looked good for Serena as she played an commanding first set. It looked as if she had never been away really moving Rezai around the court as she won 6-3. Rezai could not handle it and an break was enough for her to take the first set. Rezai showed a lot more fight in the second as she really took on Serena. It started to show her lack of matches as this was her second competition of the year her level dropped and Rezai got an break an reversed the score. It looked as if Serena was in an real battle but like true champion she went up and gear and was ruthless all the way as Rezai could not handle her pace and she raced through the third set 6-1. She won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. She told BBC Sport how much this meant to her being back at Wimbledon saying "To come back at Wimbledon and win is just awesome,"
The World Number 1 Wozniacki had much easier times of it as she outclassed her opponent Arantxa Parra Santonja. Arantxa Parra Santonja just could not live with the pace of Wozniacki. Santonja held her first game but that's as good as it got for her as Wozniacki gave her no chances. She only faced one break point in the whole match and only went on to loss another 2 more games in the whole match as she won 6-2, 6-1. It was an similar story for Sharapova as she showed off why she is the favourite to lift this title. She was last on centre court but she didnt hang around long as she moved Chakvetadze left and right throughout the match. Chakvetadze just could not settle and get into any sort of game plan and within an hour of the match she also won easily 6-2, 6-1.
There were also victories for French open champion Li Na, 4th seed Azarenka after her opponent had to retire hurt in the second set after hurting her knee and other victories for Kvitova, Bartoli, Petkovic, Pavlyuchenkova, Ivanovic, Peng, Hantuchova, Kirilenko and Safarova. The major shocks from the women's draw are the Australian and 10th seed Stosur going out to Czink 6-3, 6-4 and Jankovic going out to the Spanish women Martinez Sanchez in 3 sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. There were also losses for other minor seeds Kanepi (losing in straight sets) and Makarova (losing in an tight 3 set match 8-6 in the final).
British Players- It was an disappointing day for the mens as all 3 Wildcards all went out in the first round. Dan Evans showed the best fight out of the 3 losing in 4 tight sets 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-4. He lost an tight first set right at the end of the tie break breaking his serve. In the second Evans showed great fight and determination as he was serving for the set at 5-3 but was broken and beaten easily in the second tie break. But this didnt dampen his spirits as he get up 4-0 with an double break but did fight back and get an break but Evans hung on to win it 6-3. It was an tight 4th set but the in the 9th game Mayer got the break and there was no way back from there as he served it out.
Queen's Semi Finalist was not able to show off his magic at Wimbledon. Just faced an guy too strong. Llodra came out of the blocks faster as he raced through the first set as the set was done within 35 minutes. He broke and never looked like dropping from then on. The second set was an much closer affair as Llodra game slipped an bit Ward was playing better and had 3 chances to break in the set. Could not take them it went to an tie break where Ward had his chance at 4-2 up but he just could not take advantage and Llodra and lost it 4-7 on tie break. Llodra then got an early break in the third and Ward could not find any extra energy to break back and eventually went down to Llodra 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. Daniel Cox was also lost an game which was not completed on day one. It was his first match at Wimbledon and it showed the difference of class between his level and the next level. He went down 6-2 6-4 6-4 but he does take positives from the experience and says "I will go back now and work on the things I need to make sure that I am here regularly".
On the Women's side it was an much better picture for the girls. It was led by the British number 1 Baltacha who came through her match against Mona Barthel. Baltacha was the higher ranked girl and it showed in the match as she never looked troubled. She raced through her first set winning it 6-2 and fought her way to the second to an victory winning it 6-4. This will come as an relieve as she on this court last year was an set up and serving for the match but could not serve it out and went on to loss. The last game was her hardest game as she saved an couple of break points to win the match 6-2, 6-4.
She was followed by her Keothavong winning the all British first round tie. She beat Naomi Broady in an poor match filled with errors from both sides. They were both nervous and the standard was poor. Keothavong won the first set 6-2. Broady did fight in the second set but Keothavong did have that extra bit of quality to get an break and hold onto it to win 6-2, 6-4 but will have to improve significantly to get further. But Emily Webley-Smith was not able to make it an perfect day for the British girls as she went out in an really close match. She lost the first set 6-3 but came back fighting in the second taking it 7-5 and she came back from 2 single breaks in the 3rd set and had her chances at 6-6 15-40 but she could not break and was broken in the next game to loss it 8-6. The final score was 6-3 5-7 8-6 to Klara Zakopalova.
Because of the matches having to be made up for of yesterday's rain Heather Watson and Laura Robson were not able to take to the court for there first round match so will be on early tomorrow as long as the weather holds.
