Wimbledon day 6

Another fascinating day at SW19 as the stars come out on the middle Saturday of the Championships.

Men's- The big shock of the men's draw was Soderling getting dumped out in straight sets against the Australia's next rising star Tomic. Tomic played out of his skin and really took Soderling on while Soderling felt dizzy and sick as Tomic took the match in straight sets. with Soderling not feeling well his standard of tennis was very poor in the first set. Tomic was hitting the ball on and early and was really asking questions of Soderling of keeping up in rallies when he wasnt felling well. The set came and went very quickly as Tomic raced through the first set in just over 15 minutes of the match winning 6-1.

After having an few tablets and an time out he started hitting the ball better and was winning some more rallies. He didnt look 100% fit still but looked ok as he held his first 2 service games. The problem for him was that he wasnt putting any pressure on the Tomic serve and and this pressure tolled as in the 5th game Tomic broke and the writing was on the wall as Tomic didnt look like losing his serve at any time. The only way he would loss is if Tomic started making unforced errors and he didnt make too many of them to loss his serve and he won it 6-4. The third set was the most competitive as Soderling started to serve better and get into Tomic's serve but the young qualifier from Australia held his nerve and late in the 3rd set he broke the Soderling serve to make it 6-5 and served out the match to become his biggest ever victory of his life winning 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.

Djokovic also had an big scare as he faced Baghdatis before going through in 4 sets. In an tight first set where both men were getting into each others serve but both men remained strong and held onto there serve and it was going by serve until the very last game of the set where Baghdatis made an few unforced errors. With the unforced errors he was hitting some big aces but he hit more unforced errors and Djokovic on the second break point chance played an wonderful backhand winner to take the first set 6-4. Baghdatis knew he had to come out fighting and get an lead early which he did to his credit breaking the Djokovic serve in his second service game. Djokovic was playing some poor tennis on the Baghdatis serve and was missing shots which he normally gets in and that frustration that he was missing came through onto the court as he missed an easy ball and hit it out and showed his frustration by stamping his racket onto the ground many times. Djokovic's calm had gone and his standard of tennis went down hill from there in that set as Baghdatis won it 6-4 with the crowd on his side. He likes entertaining the crowd while playing tennis and the crowd responded in his favour.

If there was anything good to happen with that smashing of the racket it was that it took out a lot of that frustration in the second set and began to play like his normal self in third again he look calm and composed and waited for his chance to break which came in the 6th game which was an long 8 minute game which Djokovic's power was too much for Baghdatis to handle and broke for an 4-2 lead. He then held onto his serve to convert the break and be on the edge of an 2 sets to 1 lead. Baghdatis did put pressure holding his own serve and going 0-15 up on Djokovic's next game but Djokovic showed why he has only lost once all year by holding to 15 and taking the set 6-3. Djokovic did the same in the 4th holding his serve and wait for the opportunity that Baghdatis would give and he did in the 8th game of the 4th set when Baghdatis made two unforced forehand errors which handed Djokovic the break. He converted and was one game away from the match. Baghdatis again served and held his serve and then put real pressure on Djokovic going up 30-40 but Djokovic was able to hold on and came through the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Djokovic is also joined by Federer in the next round as skilfully went past former runner up Nalbandian 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Nalbandian was always chasing the match and within 2 hours Federer won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. There were other shocks in the mens draw as Monfils was beaten in 4 sets against an qualifier Kubot 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Melzer was another shock as he crashed out as well to Malisse easily 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 Malisse played well but Melzer was very poor throughout. His reward is to face the other giant killer Tomic. An chance for both men to get to the quarter finals.

The two Finalist of last year are also through. Nadal had an match to finish from yesterday's uncompleted match which he was 1 set to love up winning an tie break 8-6. The second set went like the first both men serving big and hardly losing an point on serve and which went into an tie break again where the margins were very slim again where Nadal won 7-5. The third was Nadal at his best where he swept Muller 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. Berdych impressive hitting and serving has quietly got him through 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. He has had an perfect week 1 where he hasnt dropped an set yet and the media limelight isnt on him too much. Another person hitting form in the right time is Del Potro as he came through an tricky match against Simon winning 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 setting up an match against Nadal next round. There were also wins for Fish, Ferrer, Tsonga, Llodra and Youzhny who will take on Federer in the next round.

Women's- The match of the day was Schiavone as she went down to unseeded Paszek in an Marathon match. It looked all plane sailing for Schiavone as she took the first set comfortably as Paszek looked out of place taking the first set 6-3. The second set was an close affair as both women were making mistakes but at the crucial time Paszek held it together and took the second set on the 10th game to win it 6-4.

The third set was an epic fight as both women traded early breaks in the early stages of the set. But then both women struggled to hold serve but were able to hold on with steer grit and determination. As the set went on the advantage went more to Paszek as she was serving first. It went to 6-6 but still no winner the scores went 7-7 and 8-8 with the tension rising and the crowd loving every minute and then Schiavone seemed to have got the vital break as she up 9-8. As she was serving second she had to serve out the match which was never easy with such an tense match and Paszek played on that tension and really made her work for it and Schiavone cracked and was broken back to 9-9. Paszek put the pressure even more on Schiavone by holding her next service game to love and then Paszek then showed why serving first in the final set is an bonus as she broke the Italian serve and won 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

There was no such loss shock on court one where Serena is looking like she is returning to her best. She took an break on the first Kirilenko serve taking an early 3-0 lead. Kirilenko did improve in the first set as she held her next game and nearly broke the Serena serve the next game. She was 30-40 up and there was an tight call which was called called out and on review was only millimetres out. After that Serena looked comfortable and won her service games easily from then on taking the first set 6-3. The second set Serena really did take control as she broke the Kirilenko serve in the third game and then once again in the 5th racing to an 5-1 lead. She looked to be breaking the serve again to win the match in style but Kirilenko came back from 15-40 down to win the game and delay the obvious by another game as she took the match the very next game 6-3, 6-2.

Many people's favourites to lift the trophy was again impressive as Sharapova blew Zakopalova away. Unlike Serena she loved playing on court 2 really loving the atmosphere there and she played like an champion dominating the majority of the rallies. She cut down on the errors and the double faults which she struggled against Laura Robson and came through 6-2, 6-3. She will face China's Shuai Peng as she also improved from her victory against British number 1 Baltacha as she beat Melinda Czin 6-2, 7-6. Even though she was impressive in her victory Peng will have to improve significantly if she will have any chance against Sharapova on Monday.

Another person to win easily was Wozniacki. She blew away unseeded Australian 6-3, 6-2. She seems to be improving every match which goes on at Wimbledon and seems to be finding grass easier to play as her ground strokes and serve and placement were spot on she made very few mistakes and will be one of the contenders when it comes to the latter stages. Her next round opponent will be Cibulkova who came through an tough 3 setter against Goerges. She is an rising star and she showed why by taking Cibulkova all the way eventually losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and Cibulkova will also have to improve significantly if she is to progress future. Another mini shock was Ivanovic being thrown out by Cetkovska. The former world number 1 has never looked the same since being number 1 and French Open champion losing to Cetkovska 6-2, 7-6 and she will face the come back girl Lisicki who knocked out Li Na in the last round. She followed up that win by an very convincing win against Misaki Doi of Japan 6-4, 6-2. Bartoli also won another marathon match after her last round coming back from 2 match points winning this match against Pennetta 5-7, 6-4, 9-7. This match was after the Schiavone match on court 12. The French Open Semi-Finalist and Eastbourne champion will face the defending Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams for an place in the quarter finals.

All these matches will take place on Monday as Sunday is an traditionally an day off at Wimbledon.
