Tigers edge closer to quarter final place

Bangladesh took an step closer to making the quarter finals of the world cup as they put in an good performance against the Netherlands. The Netherlands won the toss and elected to bat.

Netherlands seemed to be more determined in batting 50 overs started off really slowly. The negative batting and good bowling by Bangladesh got them a wicket as the captain Shakib Barresi the wicket keeper for 10 and Netherlands were 28-1. An new batsman Bukhari came in but the negative batting continued. They made 33 runs in the first powerplay. The bowling powerplay was taken instantly and it brought another wicket as Bukhari went out to Razzak. It was an faint edge to Rahim (wicketkeeper) and the Netherlands looked in trouble at 37-2. Bangladesh even more tightly in the second powerplay as they only healed 10 runs in 5 overs and taking the wicket of Bukhari. This brought out the inform Cooper.

The problem for the Netherlands was that there top 3 batsman were slow and negative and didnt look at all to attack the bowler and find the gaps to get the score ticking over. What Cooper did was to try and keep the score ticking over and play an positive innings. This would allow Szwarczynski to play his natural game without as much pressure. They did eventually get to 50 runs mid way through the 18th over. Just as this partnership was starting to build momentum Szwarczynski got run out by the brilliant work of Shakib. His quick thinking and his accurate throw got the opener for 28 runs. He got that off 63 balls and scoring 1 six. This brought out the other star batsman for the Netherlands Ten Doeschate. Cooper and Ten Doeschate started off well as they were looking to be an bit more positive and looked to have hit there stride very quickly, the understanding was good until another run happened as Mushfiqur Rahim ran Cooper out for 29. He scored 2 fours and got them off 41 balls. This brought out Kervezee to the crease.

To Kervezee credit he did carry on where Cooper left off and was ready to be positive in his play. Ten Doeschate was playing anchorage role while Kervezee played a few shots. They safely got the Netherlands do 100 in 190 balls and were looking at an score of 200-220 if they could keep wickets in hand. Kervezee then hit an couple of fierce shots as went onto 18 and his confidence maybe got the better of him as he went down the pitch to Shuvo bowling and Rahim did the rest stumping him out. He was out for 18 runs off 24 balls which included 2 fours.

From there the Netherlands feel apart. As no other batsman, after Kervezee, made it to double figures. The wickets just kept falling De Grooth went out for 4, Buurman out for 0, Borren out for 3 and Seelaar out for 0. There was enough time for Ten Doeschate to make an well deserved 50 off 65 balls including 2 fours and a 6. But he was left stranded as Raja was run out for 0 and they were bowled out for 160. In that innings the Netherlands lost 3 batsman to run outs Razzak getting 3 wickets for 29 runs and 2 maiden while Shakib, Hossain and Shuvo sharing an wicket a piece. But the biggest credit in the bowling goes to Shafiul Islam as he didnt get any wickets but built pressure brilliantly with figures of 9.2 overs 3 maidens 15-0. He built pressure at one end for the others bowlers to take there wickets.

Bangladesh's replay started off in worst possible fashion as Iqbal in the first over of the reply. He was bowled by Bukhari who bowled an wicket maiden over first up. This put a lot of fear into the Bangladesh fans as they remembered the poor batting display against the West Indies as Siddique came to the crease.

Kayes and Siddique batted very sensibly. They knew the run rate wasnt too high (just over 3 an over) so they played sensible cricket through the powerplays. The first powerplay conceded 30 runs but Bangladesh hadnt lost any other wickets. There were a couple of balls which went past the bat but these 2 were batting sensibly and calmly. After they got themselves in Bangladesh went an bit more attacking and positive in the second powerplay. Bangladesh reached 50 after 81 balls and the 50 partnership was up (as they lost there first wicket on 0) off 77 balls. By the end of the second powerplay Bangladesh were 64-1 and looking comfortable.

Kayes continued to bat sensibly and as the innings went on more positively. Kayes got to his 50 off 68 balls scoring 6 fours along the way. Just as these 2 were looking to win this game with 9 wickets in hand the captain Borren broke the partnership by getting Siddique for 35 off 53 balls including 4 fours in that innings. An small chance the Netherlands to get back into this match. It brought out Nafees to the middle.

Kayes and Nafees knew the run rate was low and the only way for the Netherlands to win was to take 10 wickets they decided to play more patient innings waiting for the bad balls and hitting the gaps for 1s and 2s. The problem for the Netherlands was that they didnt have any wicket taking bowlers that they could turn to try and build some pressure. They were getting this score in small targets. These 2 batsman were easing there way to victory. By drinks at the 34th over Bangladesh were 137-2 needing 24 runs with 16 overs to spare. These 2 then reached there 50 run partnership off 82 balls Nafees scoring 29 of those runs and Kayes just 18. Soon afterwards they reached 150 in the 36 over.

Bust just as these 2 were going to bat it to the end Cooper bowled Nafees for 37 runs off 60 balls 4 fours. In Cooper's next over he got the captain out Shakib for only 1 run as Bangladesh were wobbling across the line. They then bowled 5 overs only conceding 3 runs but in the 42nd over Rahim got them over the line with 2 big blows. He hit the first ball of the 42 nd over away for 4 and then the second ball for 6 as he sealed an 6 wicket win. Kayes was left 73 NO as he anchored the innings towards victory and was named the man of the match. Apart from that wobble at the end Bangladesh would be satisfied with there victory and could be through to the next round before they play again if South Africa win against Ireland and England loss to the West Indies. The Netherlands head to Kolkata to play there final game of the world cup against Ireland while Bangladesh head back to the capital to face South Africa on Saturday.
